Billionaire Brit Richard Branson Visits Canada

British billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson is currently visiting Canada.  He was in Toronto today to promote the reduction of greenhouse gases.  He will also be traveling into Canada’s arctic to get a first hand look at how global warming is affecting the region and the Inuit who live there. Here is an article in which Branson criticizes Canada for not meeting Kyoto targets and here is an article promoting Branson’s Flick Off campaign.

There has been much activity this week from the Canadian government on environmental issues.  The federal government has announced a plan to ban inefficient energy consuming light bulbs.  Here is an article about it.  You can also read an editorial written by the federal minister for the environment, John Baird, here.

PETA believes that animals have rights and deserve to have their best interests taken into consideration, regardless of whether they are useful to humans. Like you, they are capable of suffering and have an interest in leading their own lives; therefore, they are not ours to use—for food, clothing, entertainment, experimentation, or any other reason.

It was appropriate that our project is taking place during the time when Earth Day is celebrated.  Here is a link to a site with some articles on recycling, “green” cars, how to be a green shopper and some other topics of interest to our project.

Here is a pdf which is on European agreements towards animal testing. It is a bit hard to understand as it is like a script of a meeting, however it talks about what European countries are trying to do. I am not sure how valid it all is but it seems pretty good to me.

Famous Vegetarians

I’ve been looking at vegetarians for the last three lessons and I’ve been told I need to post something, so… This website shows many famous vegetarians, not only people in the media at the moment, but also famous people throughout history. Many are either talented, good looking or just plain cool, so it wastes some time in lessons without getting bored. In addition to this, there are sections at the bottom with stories on vegetarianism, like how Jesus was a vegetarian and also how an old McDonold’s clown has turned vegetarian.

Overall, this website holds no use to anyone, but none the less, I like it. 4/10 ****

Why should Christians be Vegetarian?

I have been researching Catholic views on Vegetarianism and how it affects the earth. I saw a comment on a website that says that the Bible suggests that Jesus was a vegetarian. I decided to research this on www.Google.com  and see what websites I could find which could link in with this. In doing so I found the site: www.jesusveg.com. This site is a Catholic and Christian site which explains why Christians should be vegetarian using references from the Bible and such like. It suggests that Gods perfect world, The Garden of Ede, was vegetarian and so Christians should follow this in order to make the world the perfect place for God and live in peace. Its a good and useful web page as it also teaches how we should respect our environment.

Stop Animal Testing is another website with a documentary on animal testing.  It is against animal testing and focuses mainly on laboratories in the US. It has reports on inhumane treatments of animals. It is aimed at “the American tax-payer” but I think it will apply to anyone. It has a link on the right which looks at alternatives but our school system blocked it so I don’t know what it’s like.

McDonalds in the Spotlight!

Filed under: Deforestation, Global Warming, Vegetarianism, Waste and Recycling

I have a been looking and researching on the internet how vegetarianism is and isn’t helping global warming. In doing so I found a Kiwi website that deals with different issues including politics, economic issues and environmental issues among others. The website has an article on how how agricultral farming is adding to global warming and is strongly contributing to deforestation.

The website high-lights how McDonalds is one of the bigest contributors to this issue. It says that McDonalds has cuts down and used a vast amount of space in the Amazon to create farms to beef up cows for ther slaughter. This would be acceptablem, however they hae prepared the land in such a way that it is not possible for any thing to grow on the land when the farming leaves.

The website called: http://www.justfocus.org.nz is a great website discussing many different issues in the media at present.

Godtube.com

Not wanting to be outdone by my esteemed colleague I too have found some multimedia tools that may help you. Godtube is a Christian version of Youtube and has films only to do with Christianity.

A few warnings though. The videos will not be viewable within Richard Challoner School as the site is currently blocked by the school’s firewall. Also the site is a Christian site, not Catholic, and therefore some of the resources are not in line with the requirements of the project. One thing it does have is the ability to embed the player and the video in the wiki but not the blog. So I have posted the clips on the Wiki

This first clip outlines some reasons why Christians should care for the environment.

This second clip should be watched and used with CAUTION. It is made by a group of Christians in the UK who do not believe in Global Warming and it’s effects. They use the Bible and some logical arguments to back this up. But I must stress that this is not the views of the mainstream Christianity or the Roman Catholic Church but the use of the Bible References is interesting.

You can find them Wiki“>here.

Hello to the Ladies and Gentlemen of the Flat Planet Project

As you know the use of multimedia is an integral component of this project (20% of the points available) and I wanted to point you to an online tool that you may find useful in completing this aspect of your project.  It is called SlideShare and it allows you to upload files which you can then embed into the wiki (or a blog).  If you want to use this service you need to visit their site and sign up for a free account.  Then you can upload your file and they will provide the code you need to embed it in your wiki page.

Below is an example of what you can do.

Information about fishing and whales
April 18, 2007, 10:08 am

Fish stocks in the
North Sea are being seriously over fished. The numbers of fish, such as cod are falling dramatically. When the fish population drops below a critical level it may not recover.

Fishermen have been quotas to limit the number of fish they can remove.

This should then allow the fish to breed and the fish population to recover.

Many different countries fish in the
North Sea. For sustainability to work, careful planning, cooperation and agreement are required between all the different countries.

Because Whales live far from land it is not easy to get international agreements to stop Whaling. It is even harder to police the laws and ensure that some whalers do not break these international agreements. Some Whales are kept in captivity. They are used for both entertainment and research. Many are bread in Captivity and are not used to swimming in open sea.
